Citizens’ Climate lobby to give presentations in Gulfport; Rep. Palazzo seen as key for legislative solution
Sept. 22, 2014--Richard Bradley, Gulf Coast Regional Coordinator with Citizens’ Climate Lobby, will speak Sunday, September 28 and Monday, September 29 in Gulfport about our changing climate, its impact on Gulf Coast residents and how we can move past partisanship and begin addressing the challenge with a market-based approach which studies show will grow jobs and GDP in Mississippi.
“People can find the science and problem of climate change confusing and overwhelming. We can all agree that the science will never be settled, but we know enough. After all, we never know when we’re going to be in a car crash yet we wear seatbelts. Buckling that seatbelt doesn’t cost you a thing and protects you against possible dramatic consequences. Well we can take out the same kind of no-cost insurance policy that’s based on free enterprise principles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, as an added benefit we can reduce the need for EPA regulation, create jobs and grow the economy at a faster clip than if we did nothing at all; we just need to convince our elected officials.” said Bradley.
Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a grassroots advocacy organization, with 195 chapters across the U.S. and Canada, dedicated to generating the political will for effective national policies to address climate change. The group is working to build support in both parties for a carbon fee that returns all of the revenue to households, creating a market-based incentive to make the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy.
“Because he represents Mississippi residents whose personal liberty is at risk, while also serving in the U.S. House on both the Science, Space and Technology and Homeland Security Committees, Congressman Steven Palazzo can be a key player.” said Bradley. “As citizens we must rise above the partisan politics which would almost certainly mortgage the future of Mississippi’s Gulf Coast residents. We must have constituents in the 4th District who see a way to give Palazzo the support he needs to move forward with effective climate legislation.”
WHAT: Sunday Presentation – “A Market-Based Solution to Reducing Greenhouse Gases and How Citizens Will Make it Happen.” Monday Presentation – Creating Political Will for a Livable World.
WHO: Richard Bradley, Gulf Coast Regional Coordinator with Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), will discuss political will for climate solutions and the critical role people in Southern Mississippi will play.
WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 28, 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 29, 6:30 – 8:30.
WHERE: Harmony Hall, 2514 19th Avenue, Gulfport MS 39501 (North off Pass Road, about 1/3 mile East of Hwy 49) Park across the street or in corner mall.
WHY: (1) Because a Katrina/Rita type of year, which under normal circumstances is a 1/100 year event, becomes a 1/40 year event or is 2.5X more likely to occur with our changing climate. (2) Because according to the Pentagon’s Quadrennial Defense Review climate change will act as a catalyst to destabilize governments across the world. (3) Because a carbon fee and dividend approach is supported by a number of conservatives including Reagan’s Secretary of State George Shultz and economists – Art Laffer (Reagan), Greg Mankiw (Romney Advisor). It’s the kind of solution – an alternative to regulations – that appeals to conservatives.
