Repeal and Refund the Tax on Electric and Hybrid Vehicles!

MS Code 27-19-23, passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor, levies a hefty $150 annual tax on Electric Vehicles and a $75 annual tax on Hybrid Vehicles under the guise of offsetting MS’s annual $400 million road/bridge shortfall.
LET'S DO THE MATH!
According to the MS Department of Revenue, Mississippi has approximately 14,000 hybrid vehicles (like the Toyota Prius) on the road, and 620 electric vehicles.*
14,000 HVs x $75 tax/year = $1.05 million annually
620 EVs x $150 tax/year = $93,000 annually
Total = $1.14 million/year

This would contribute 0.285% toward the annual $400 million road/bridge budget gap -- Not even a drop in the bucket! It is patently unfair to single out a certain class of Mississippians and businesses with a punitive tax. This tax is unfair and ineffective for solving budget shortfall. REPEAL AND REFUND THE TAX!

Call Lt. Governor Reeves’ office at (601) 359-3200 and Speaker Gunn’s office at (601) 359-3300. Tell them to REPEAL AND REFUND THE TAX on Electric and Hybrid vehicles.
INCENTIVIZE NOT PENALIZE!
