Posted by DAN ZEGART (CIC)/March 15, 2017
With the Kemper power plant officially scheduled to go on-line imminently according to builder Southern Company, a group of key engineers and managers who work on the plant's so-far-inoperable gasifier has left the company.
Earlier this month, Southern Company posted a cluster of want ads on its web site for a "gasification owner," a "refinery technician-mechanic," a "refinery technician-entry level," and a "gasification technician."

REPORT ON THE MARCH FOR MISSISSIPPI FROM GULF COAST GROUP CHAIR STEVE SHEPARD

GULF COAST GROUP CHAIR STEVE SHEPARD SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE AT THE MARCH OR MISSISSIPPI
Jeanne and I rode the bus from Gulfport and attended the "March for Mississippi" yesterday.

The speakers were all incredible, but I have to say I've never been more proud to be a Sierra Club member than when our Sierra Club president Aaron Mair got up to speak wearing his father's Auto Union jacket. (photo at right)

MISSISSIPPI POWER COMPANY ACHIEVES NEW MILESTONE:...JUNK BOND STATUS

From Moodys Investors Service
RATINGS RATIONALE
"The downgrade of Mississippi Power's ratings reflects our expectations for heightened regulatory contentiousness as the utility pursues cost recovery on the increasingly uneconomic Kemper integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plant, construction of which has severely stressed the utility's financial profile" said Michael G. Haggarty, Associate Managing Director.

FROM THE NORTHSIDE SUN: THE KEMPER COUNTY FIASCO

February 28, 2017
BY Wyatt Emmerich

Southern Company chief executive officer Tom Fanning now says it may be less expensive to run the Kemper power plant on natural gas than gasified lignite (low grade coal). That means the $6.2 billion cost of the gasifier is down the drain. This is what happens when you bet billions on experimental technology. The magnitude of the waste boggles imagination.

For $250 million, Southern could have purchased a used natural gas plant capable of producing as much power as Kemper. While Kemper was under construction, Entergy bought three of them for that price.

REPORT FROM THE FAKE LAKES MEETING: STEVE SHEPARD

Gulf Coast Chair Steve Shephard was at the Fake Lakes meeting in Lucedale last night. Here are his thoughts and impressions.

I want to thank everyone who attended the meeting last night and thank those who wanted to go but were unable due to last minute "emergencies" or conflicts that couldn't be avoided. I am grateful to the Singing River Hospital Retirees for coming because their presence proved this isn't a bunch of tree huggers standing up against George County.
