The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced an unprecedented move to resurrect the destructive Yazoo Backwater Pumps in Mississippi’s South Delta by reconsidering its 2008 veto decision in response to the area’s recent flooding. If resurrected, the Yazoo Pumps project would drain and destroy more than 200,000 acres of wetlands, some of our nation’s richest habitat that supports over 450 species of birds, fish and wildlife.

Central District Commissioner Cecil Brown, a Democrat from Jackson, made the announcement at a Jackson forum sponsored by the Capitol press corps and Mississippi State University's Stennis Institute of Government.

One Lake Project Could Lead to 'Catastrophic' Bridge Failures, MDOT Says

The Mississippi Department of Transportation says the One Lake Project proposal would result in the "catastrophic failure" of bridges on the Pearl River if allowed to proceed as planned. In a September email to the key sponsor of the project, the Rankin-Hinds Pearl River Flood & Drainage Control District, MDOT said the proposed dredging of the river would weaken the foundation of nine bridges in the project area, possibly leading to collapse.
