The Southern Co. was dealt a huge — and deserved — blow this week when Mississippi’s Public Service Commission voted unanimously to delay prudency hearings on the controversial “clean coal” plant the utility giant is building in Kemper County.

Agreement Brings Clean Energy Investments,
Cleaner Air to Mississippi
AUGUST 4, 2014 GULFPORT, MS – Four years of legal challenges by the Sierra Club to Mississippi Power’s Kemper County Coal Plant have ended in a landmark legal settlement. The agreement brings $15 million in energy efficiency and clean energy investments to the state, sets the stage for homeowners to install solar power and requires power plants in Gulfport, Mississippi and Greene County, Alabama to stop burning coal over the next 20 months.

It appears the Mississippi Development Authority has come to its senses on the subject of drilling in the Mississippi Sound and near the barrier islands. The Gulf Restoration Network, which has led the opposition to a plan to lease parts of our state waters to those who would like to explore for oil and natural gas, notes the deadline has passed for the MDA to appeal a Chancery Court ruling in the case.

Traces of a chemical contained in dispersants used to break up oil during the 87-day BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010 were found in material deposited on deepwater corals six months after the spill, and in weathered oil patties on Gulf Coast beaches four years later, according to a scientific letter published online this week in Environmental Science & Technology, the peer-reviewed research journal of the American Chemical Society. Researchers found tiny amounts of DOSS, an abbreviation of the chemical compound dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate, in both the oil patties and deepwater sediment.

PBS aired the broadcast premiere of "A Fierce Green Fire: The Battle for a Living Planet" on Earth Day, April 22.

Heather McTeer Toney, the new Southeast EPA Administrator, published an Op-Ed in the Jackson Free Press (and other papers) celebrating Earth Day by explaining how everyone can lower emissions by becoming energy efficient. This year's Earth Day theme is: "Act on Climate."

The IPCC embodies a unique opportunity to provide rigorous and balanced scientific information to decision-makers because of its scientific and intergovernmental nature. Participation in the IPCC is open to all member countries of the WMO and United Nations.
