Mississippi Power Tries to Keep Public, Sierra Club out of Kemper Expense Proceedings

JACKSON, MS – Mississippi Power Company (MPC) shocked consumers when it asked the Mississippi Public Service Commission (PSC) Friday afternoon (Feb. 21) to block the Sierra Club from participating in the proceedings to determine how much customers should pay for the company’s over budget, months-delayed Kemper County coal plant. The proceedings, known as prudency review, are the only opportunity for consumer advocates and the public to ask tough questions and challenge Mississippi Power’s attempts to charge customers billions for the coal plant.

As the movement against the Kemper County coal plant continues to grow, Mississippi State Representative Jeff Guice (R-Ocean Springs) and Senator Albert Butler (D-Port Gibson) have introduced bills to repeal last year’s legislation authorizing Mississippi Power Company to issue bonds and force customers to pay for them.

NEW PSC COMMISSIONER STEVE RENFRO SPEAKS AT STENNIS INSTITUTE LUNCHEON

Recently appointed Southern District Public Service Commissioner Steve Renfroe spoke yesterday at the Stennis Institute Capitol Press Forum at The Capitol Club in downtown Jackson, Mississippi. Sierra Club's own Louie Miller was there, and Gulf Coast group member Steve Shepard was mentioned in Renfro's opening remarks. Mississippi Public Broadcasting was also there and filed this report.

DEKALB, MS BY STEVE SHEPARD NOV. 8, 2013 Steve attended last Friday's protest at the Kemper Plant, when it was visited by Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, Governor Phil Bryant and some other foreign dignitaries, and he was interviewed by Norwegian televison. Here's his first person account. "I said on-camera that I thought Norwegians were too smart to build a plant like the Kemper Plant, and that it was too dirty and expensive, and could only get built in Mississippi because we are the dumbest state in the nation."
